Top 11 tips for sucessfull breastfeeding

breast_feeding_baby

Women often spend so much time reading books preparing for birth but little time getting ready for breastfeeding. If you think about it we spend a few hours in labour but maybe months breastfeeding.

To help  you along the way we have prepared these helpful hints and also have  FREE breastfeeding workshop on Sunday 1st of April.

Whilst some women find breastfeeding straightforward, the vast majority of us may have some form of struggle. Even on my second baby, and as a doula supporting breastfeeding women, I had issues. So here goes:

  • If you are having problems ask for help from your hospital’s lactation consultant. These are very very busy women, so rather than depend on staff midwife to chase her up. Get her phone number at your next prenatal visit, save it into your phone and ring her from your bed. If you are at home or the hospital staff are too busy, call up your local independent lactation consultant.
  • Don’t forget that for the first 2 weeks or so, that breasfeeding can be a bit uncomfortable on the nipples and take your breath away! Some people recommend preparing them for that babies vice-like gummy grip by roughing them

Benefits of Osteopathy during Pregnancy: FREE talk March 10th

preggy-belly

During pregnancy enormous physical, chemical and emotional changes take place over a relatively short period of time. The body has to get used to carrying up to 20lb/10kg of baby, waters and placenta, which can impose great physical strain on the organs, tissues, joints and ligaments of the body. In order for the pregnant body to adapt to all these changes it has to find new ways to walk, sit and sleep resulting with new aches and pains arising.

Any mother with an existing back problem, or a history of strains or imbalances in her body from past accidents, may find it difficult to accommodate these changes, and she may suffer more discomfort as a result.

The elbowroom Osteopath Jonathan Wills will be discussing the benefits of osteopathy in the elbowroom on Sat March 10th after Prenatal Yoga class and will be happy to answer any questions or queries you may have. Jonathan will give some top tips to relieve back pain in pregnancy, discussing areas such as exercise, sleeping positions and posture.

How to get the best hospital birth possible

Physiological birth in hospital

Here are some of my tips to inspire and assist you in enjoying your baby’s birth in hospital. If you need that extra helping hand join me at the Trust in Birth – Active Birth workshop on the 23rd of October.

Following the natural rhythms of labour, the vast majority of mothers with normal pregnancies are free to let their bodies’ normal physiological functions birth their babies. Many women birth in hospitals avoiding any medication and medical intervention unless medically necessary. We have used the term physiological birth to steer away from some of the different interpretations of ‘natural’ birth. By physiological birth, we mean a healthy mother with an uncomplicated pregnancy giving birth with no medical interventions. Of course some births will necessitate assistance from your caregivers but we mean to differentiate necessity from hospital procedure or managed birth.

Book with an independent midwife or a midwifery led unit

(domino or community midwives)
Midwives are highly skilled and trained to look at birth as a physiologically normal and magical event in a woman’s life. The rate of women expressing birth as a satisfying experience, and success rates of physiological birth, is often far greater with … Read More

How does acupuncture help to avoid induction ?

pregnancy

How can I reduce the risk of being induced? Around 6 weeks before the birth of your baby your cervix starts to ripen. Just like a juicy pear it softens and prepares the birth of your baby when it will start to thin and open. Starting to calm your life down and relax at this time is beneficial.

Studies have shown that using acupuncture from your 37th or 38th week of pregnancy may reduce your risk of induction by around 20%

And if you are already under pressure from your hospital for being post dates?

We have successfully treated many women in speeding up the cervical ripening and inducing natural labour with acupuncture and have demonstrated the use of acupressure during labour to help keep labour going. Again this is all backed up with medical trials. (Research has shown that the average length of labour in women who had given birth for the first time was reduced from eight hours and two minutes to 6 hours and 36 minutes in the group of women who had prebirth acupuncture).

How can I help turn my breech or transverse baby?

A baby starts to migrate head down from about the 28th week. … Read More
