The Feldenkrais Method with Mark Keogh
Lisa Wilkinson FREE session - March 7th
Workshop - Sun 14th March

Cost 75

The Feldenkrais Method© is a  sophisticated, proven and enjoyable way of creating new movement possibilities, eliminating pain and discomfort from daily life and improving the flexibility of ones mind.
The method is based in a dynamic, holistic view of the nervous system as an intelligent, adaptable organism whose essential nature it is to learn, develop and grow.
Some of the main principles include A) developing a kind attitude to ourselves B) By bringing attention to the way we act/move and think  we can create new patterns of behaviour C) Being present in the body grounds us in the present moment and gives us the opportunity to step outside of our habitual modes of thinking and moving.

This will consisit a day of lessons in Awareness Through Movement. The group lessons typically take a function (eg turning, standing, bending) for improvement. We are asked to attend to what  happens  in the body during the structured, movement explorations. Important, forgotten places begin to wake up and over-worked spots begin to calm down. During the lessons the participants will be guided through structured, movement experiments and asked to direct their attention to the unfolding of the movements through their system.
Habits
Each of us have ways of moving, acting, thinking etc..which are so much part of us that we are not  aware of them. These unconscious habits perform themselves outside of our control and direction – you could say they perform us. Many of our aches, pains and movement difficulties can be traced back to these blind spots. The Feldenkrais method aims to bring awareness to these automatic, unconscious actions and to make them accessible to our conscious control . Only with this self-awareness can we feel the freedom to discard the old habit and try something novel, comfortable and intelligent.
In Functional Integration Mark works in a respectful, hands-on manner with clients in order to discover together unconscious habits and help the person to find alternatives. The very discovery of the habit leads to change.  In this way we can discover new modes of movement, action and thought.
Benefits
People from all kinds of backgrounds have benefitted from the work. Clients may have pain or postural difficulties, or wishes to improve artistic or sporting performances. Many people combine the method with psychotherapies and some wish to remain flexible into old age. People of all ages and interests come to use the method to help undo the damage of unchecked and unconscious habits.

Yoga and Pilates for Athletes with Lisa Wilkinson Lisa Wilkinson
Starts Thursday 25th March, 18:30-19:45
Cost 99 - 6 week intensive course

Lisa an ex county sprinter and long jumper presents this unique course for everyone serious abou their sport. This combination of systems takes the best of both worlds of pilates and yoga to improve your technique and keep your bodies strong, supple and injury free.

Yoga - a powerful tool for reducing stress, lowering blood pressure, improving concentration and balance, and increasing muscular strength, endurance and flexibility. The slow, focused movements require a strong mid-section and the isometric contractions of many exercises will add a new form of resistance training to your typical machine-based workouts. Routines incorporate slow, steady flexibility exercise that is ideal for athletes.

Pilates is a physical conditioning system concentrating on development of the core of the body, the Powerhouse. Regular Pilates practice increases muscular strength and endurance, improves posture, and increases flexibility and helps prevent injury All sports have their own key patterns of movement and repeated use of these movement patterns can result in muscular imbalance. Less relevant muscle groups can become weak and inefficient, with the more predominant muscles becoming bulky and tight. Pilates focuses on the body as a whole, aiming to rebalance muscles and improve postural alignment.

Mindfulness for Stress ReductionLisa Wilkinson
An 8-week experiential course with Helen Byrne
Wednesday 21st April  to 9th June with a Day of Mindfulness on Saturday 22nd May.
Cost 300 which includes 8x2 hour classes, a full Day of Mindfulness, course workbook and CDs

Do you get stressed, tense, anxious? Do you sometimes have difficulty sleeping because your mind is so busy? Do you find that you worry even though you know it won’t help the situation?

When we find that we can’t let things go, going over and over the same thoughts, our mind is caught up in the past. When we worry or are anxious our mind is caught up in the future, in what might or might not happen. When our minds are focussed on the past and the future we are missing out on this moment, the present, the only time we have to really be alive, to grow, to learn.

Mindfulness is the skill of being fully present with whatever is happening in our lives. When practiced skillfully we can learn to befriend our experience, no matter what it is, with non-judgmental awareness and with compassion for ourselves and others. We learn to respond with wisdom and calm rather than reacting automatically to people and events in our lives.

In this course we learn a range of mindfulness practices and through instruction and guidance, class discussion and home practice we learn to bring mindfulness into all aspects of our lives. To gain the full benefit of the course it is advised that you commit to the home practice element of 45 minutes a day.

Extensive research shows that developing mindfulness has many beneficial effects including:

  • Reduced anxiety and depression
  • Better sleep
  • Better physical and psychological health
  • Reduced anger and fatique
  • Greater sense of purpose in life
  • Enhanced relationships
  • Stronger immunity

Mindfulness Instructor: Helen Byrne, B.A., H.Dip.Ed., Dip.Psych.  Helen has a background in education, psychology and family therapy.  She has been practicing yoga  and meditation since 1997, trained as a yoga teacher in 2004 and is currenty completing an M.Sc. in Mindfulness-Based Approaches at the University of Wales at Bangor.
