What type of posture do you have?

spinal-check

Are you a swayback? A sloucher? Military type? Does your bum stick out a bit too much?

The truth is – the way you sit or stand can have a negative effect on your body over time causing niggling aches or worse.

Read on to find out what posture type you might have. And if you can’t work out what is going on – our physio and physical therapists will check you out in our clinic at no charge.

Poor posture while sitting, walking or even just standing up can lead to additional strain on your neck and back muscles, as well as your nerves. This excess and unnecessary strain can build up over time and give you the aches that you feel on your back and neck. About 80% of people suffer from back or neck pain at some stage in their lives.

Are you feeling any niggling pains or tension now?

When the spine is not in proper alignment, the back muscles, ligaments, discs and spinal joints are all under extra stress. If not corrected, this may lead to more permanent problems.Back and neck pain can be improved by correcting poor posture, stretching tight muscles and strengthening weak muscles.

Do any of these describe you?
Stand side-on in a mirror wearing very little.  Jump up and down and when you land, check yourself out (or ask a close friend how your help out). Are you:

  • Leaning your head forward – Forward head posture is when your chin juts forward. Perhaps your shoulders are also forward with a rounding of your upper back.
  • Sticking your bum out – Over arching your lower back and chest forward. Very typical in those with weak abs, especially women.
  • Slouching – The shoulders are rounded forward. The curve on your lower and upper back are exaggerated.
  • Sway back – This can occur when your hips sink forward and your spine hangs back. Men often get this – just like Marlboro man.
  • Military type – Your upper back is exaggeratedly straight with your lower back over arched (bum sticking out).
  • Curvey spine – One hip is slightly higher than the other and your spine may have a snake like appearance. Common with parents from favouring one hip to carry children on.
  • Perfect posture - Drawing an imaginary plumb line from the crown of your head, through your neck to your tail bone – everything lines up.

How we can help you to become pain free?

Hi. I’d love to avail of your posture assessment. I have quite rounded shoulders and recently had a baby and both the pregnancy and carrying the baby have made my posture much worse. I am anxious to do something to correct it before it gets worse.

Also my husband and I are both intested in doing a First Aid / CPR course for babies / children. I know you ran a course before Christmas and I wonder will you be running another one any time soon.

    Thank you.

    Kind regards,
    Catherine

Hi, Thanks for your offer, I would love to have an assessment on my posture done. I have neck and shoulder pain from time to time also poor strength in my lower back.
I would like to attend your pilates and zumba class but would prefer to do these classes in the mornings. Any chance you would do classes in the daytime?
    Regards,
    Yvonne

    Hi Catherine,
I will ask the clinic to contact you to arrange an appointment on Tuesday. Good to get it sorted.

A few things to remember is to try not to carry the baby on the same side all the time. We have a habit of propping them up on the same hip all the time. So try and swap.

Also if you are picking the baby up from a low surface, bend your knees and do it with a straight back. If you don’t then after time the lumber area will weaken.

As for the babies and children first aid courses. These will resume in September. We will keep you posted with dates after the summer.

Hi. I would love to avail of your assessment offer. I have a weak lower back and when I try exercises to strenten my stomach muscles it seems to hurt my back. I’d like to find a Yoga or Pilates program that would help. I am reasonably fit otherwise.
    Regards.
