How Reflexology helps IBS, Hormones & Headaches

What is reflexology?

Reflexology is so much more than a relaxing foot massage. Reflexology is based on the principal that certain reflex points on the feet correspond to different body organs and systems, and that pressing them creates real benefits for the person’s health. It is a unique treatment that benefits those suffering from a broad spectrum of health conditions and disorders.

What common conditions can reflexology treat?

1. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

20% of people in Ireland suffer IBS, living with symptoms that can cause huge amounts of shame and embarrassment. Allopathic medicine often over-relies on medication to treat IBS; however, this can actually perpetuate symptoms and trap sufferers in a vicious cycle. As symptoms can range from mildly unpleasant to massively debilitating, those living with IBS may be desperate for relief. Luckily, reflexology can help!

Constipation can be improved by using a finger walking technique through the small and large intestines, clearing any blockages in the process and ‘waking up’ the body’s digestion. Diarrhoea, where the food is being rushed through the body too quickly, can be eased using gentle ‘holds’ pressed on to the middle of the small intestine area.

Reflexology understands that the body is a whole system; as such, a problem in one part of the body can have a knock-on effect on everything else. Stress is known to have a massive effect on digestive disorders but can be improved using reflex points at the adrenal glands and solar plexus, both crucial players in the stress response.

2. Headaches and Migraines

Reflexologists use a map to locate pressure points on the feet to alleviate headaches and migraines. By locating these pressure points, they can relieve the stress and tension in the body that often causes headaches. Prior to treatment, reflexologists will fill out a detailed consultation form to ensure that your particular reason for a headaches or migraine can be treated effectively; however, it’s always advisable to get chronic headaches checked by a medical professional first.

3. Infertility & Hormone Control

Reflexology can offer amazing relief for ovulation and menstruation. It can also improve many of the reproductive issues that are known to impact fertility: PCOS, PMS, blocked or damaged fallopian tubes, endometriosis and other reproductive problems can all be helped by treatment. As each case is so individual, there are a myriad of techniques that could potentially help. A reflexologist may work through the reflexology points of the ovaries, lymphatic system, uterus, circulatory system, and even the kidneys to increase libido.

These are just 3 issues that Reflexology has been proven to treat. Reflexology is available at The elbowroom by our therapist Lesley Nolan. Each person is given an overall view of their health and therefore the suggested treatment is tailored to relate to each individual.
