Which Yoga Style Is Right for You? A Simple Guide

If you’re thinking about trying yoga in Dublin, one of the first questions that often comes up is:

Which yoga class should I start with?

We receive many enquiries from people who are either completely new to yoga or who tried a class years ago and aren’t sure where to begin again. The good news is that there isn’t one “right” yoga style for everyone. The best class for you depends on what you’re looking for  whether that’s relaxation, gentle movement, building strength, or something a little more dynamic.

Here’s a simple guide to help you find the yoga style that might suit you best.

Yoga for Complete Beginners

If you’re new to yoga, starting with a slower and more accessible class is often the best approach. It gives you time to understand the movements, breathing and rhythm of a yoga practice.

Yoga Nidra

Yoga Nidra is one of the most accessible places to begin. It combines gentle stretching with guided meditation, helping the body deeply relax while calming the mind. It’s perfect if you’re feeling stressed, tired, or simply curious about yoga but unsure where to start.

Hatha Yoga

Hatha yoga is another great starting point for beginners. Classes focus on learning postures, alignment and breathing techniques at a steady and manageable pace. It’s a wonderful way to build confidence in yoga while becoming more aware of how your body moves.

Gentle Yoga for Relaxation and Flexibility

Some people are looking for a slower practice that allows the body to release tension and unwind.

Yin Yoga

Yin yoga is a very gentle and calming practice. It’s especially helpful if you spend long hours sitting or if you want something slower and restorative.

Restorative Yoga

Restorative yoga focuses on deep relaxation and nervous system recovery. Using props and supported postures, the body can fully relax while the mind settles.

Many people choose restorative yoga when they need to slow down and recharge.

Yoga for Movement and Flow

For those who enjoy a more dynamic style of yoga or who have practiced before, there are classes that bring more movement and energy.

Vinyasa Yoga

Vinyasa yoga connects movement with breath, creating a flowing sequence of postures. It’s more active than slower classes and can help build strength, mobility and balance.

re postures are held for longer periods of time. This allows the body to stretch deeply while encouraging relaxation and stillness.

Many students who have tried yoga before enjoy returning to practice with Vinyasa.

Dynamic Flow

Dynamic Flow is similar in energy, offering continuous movement and flowing transitions that keep the body engaged and the mind focused.

Yoga with a Fitness Focus

Some classes blend yoga with strength and conditioning.

Yogalates

Yogalates combines elements of yoga and Pilates, creating a balanced practice that works on flexibility, strength and core stability.

Yoga Sculpt

Yoga Sculpt adds strength and toning exercises into a yoga-inspired class, making it a great option if you’re looking for a more fitness-focused workout.

Pilates as Another Starting Point

For some people, Mat Pilates can also be a great introduction to mindful movement.

It focuses on core strength, posture and stability, and many students enjoy combining Pilates with yoga as part of their weekly routine.

Returning to Yoga After a Break

If you practiced yoga in the past but haven’t been on the mat for a while, it can be helpful to start with Hatha or Yin yoga to ease back in.

Once your body feels comfortable again, you might enjoy exploring Vinyasa or Dynamic Flow for a more active practice.

Yoga During Pregnancy

We sometimes receive enquiries from pregnant students asking if they can join regular yoga classes.

For safety reasons, pregnant students do not attend our standard yoga classes. Instead, we offer a specialised 4-week Pregnancy Yoga course taught by a teacher trained specifically to support the changing needs of pregnancy.

This ensures a safe and supportive environment for both mother and baby.
