This beginners yoga course is perfect for those completely new to yoga or haven’t been in a while and would like to refresh. Learn the basic postures, breath work and develop a great yoga foundation.


Yoga is one of the original concepts which today would be labelled as holistic. That means that the body is related to the breath; both are related to the brain; in turn this links with the mind, which is a part of consciousness.

Hatha yoga is the physical aspect of the practice of yoga. Hatha yoga emphasises asanas ( the practice of postures), pranayama (breathing techniques) and dhyana (meditation). It aims to balance different energy flows within the human body.The postures range from the basic to the complex, from the easily accomplished to the very challenging. While the movements tend to be slow and controlled, they provide an invigorating workout for the mind and body, including the internal organs.

Flexibility

With correct instruction, yoga is an excellent way to stretch your muscles and increase the range of motion in your joints. By practicing the asanas, or poses, regularly, you can help release the lactic acid build up that is a common cause of those nagging aches and pains.

Posture

Through practicing standing and sitting yoga asanas, you will have a good reason to stand tall. By using your abdominal muscles to maintain a pose, you significantly strengthen your core, making it easier to straighten your back and fix that slouched back.

Breathing

Due to the deep, mindful breathing that is necessary for yoga, you can strengthen your lung capacity, as well as your endurance. This can be incredibly helpful for running enthusiasts and those who suffer from stress-related issues.

Reduced Stress

Yoga can help you find a sense of calm that is missing in our busy day to day life. Most styles of yoga use meditation techniques that can help reduce ‘self-talk’ that is often the root of anxiety and stress. Deep breathing also makes you focus on your breath and clear your mind, which can bring a much-needed sense of calmness.

A Healthy Heart

Studies have shown that yoga can reduce your heart rate, a great benefit those with blood pressure issues, as well as heart disease.

Angela McDonagh

Angela has a long-held interest in meditation and mindfulness through Buddhism. Her love of yoga and mindfulness connects to her work as an artist. As an artist, she is interested in the solid set against the ephemeral, which carries through to the body and the importance of the breath, and how it anchors us in the present moment. Her research-based Masters in Fine Art focused on the experience of space and place along with Japanese Aesthetic Principles and Zen philosophy. She is a trained Kundalini Reiki practitioner and she completed her 250-hour yoga teacher training at The elbowroom.
